A: Zone 2 is a seperate pre amp out. You can also configure Zone 2 to output on the surround back speaker taps, giving you a powered Zone 2. Turning it on and off and selecting sources is done with the remote control. You have to press the Zone 2 button on the remote, then the power buttons, input selection and volume controls are set to operate Zone 2. Check the owners manual. If you don't have it, download it from Onkyo's web portal.

Q: I have stereo speakers that use bare wire connections. Can this connect to them or do i need to install connectors?

A: you can connect a bare wire (should tin the wire first). Rotate the connector counterclockwise and insert the bare tinned wire into one of two slots at the base of the connector.(slots are located at 8oclock and 2 o'clock)

A: yes

A: Yes both outputs can be enabled. You can also switch using the remote to each output individually.

Great receiver. Still no DTS X though
I replaced my Onkyo TX-SR707 with the TX-NR646. Set up was simple using the included setup microphone. If you are looking to future proof your home theater this may be the receiver for you. It is HDCP 2.2 capable, Dolby Atmos. Sadly no DTS X. It is at a decent price point for the features it provides and power output. I have my 7.2 speaker system set up for Dolby Atmos 5.2.2. The receiver does not upscale it only passes the 3D and 4K signal through to the LG OLED (55EF9500). Connections There are plenty of inputs for components. I am only using HDMI ( I may get a record player and test out the Phono input.) The first three inputs are the only ones HDCP 2.2 compatible. I have my Xfinity, 4K up scaling Blu-ray, and Roku 4 on those inputs. The Apple TV, PS3 and Amazon FireTV Stick on the next three. I have one more left. Connections are evenly spaced, so there's enough room for the HDMI cables. One HDCP 2.2 compatible output goes to the OLED. Speaker terminals are binding posts. So they are compatible with banana plugs and bare speaker wire. There are two sub woofer preouts. I connect to the LFE input on both sub. I use the receiver to control the volume and crossover frequency to them. I don't use the wireless I'm using Ethernet connection. So I have to review of the wireless feature. Audio The volume never gets above 50. Rarely does it even get that loud. It's very clean un-distored sound. I'm no audiophile but I do enjoy tight bass and clean mids and highs. This fits the bill. You are able to tweak the speaker levels if the automatic setting are not to your liking. I did have to adjust my dolby atmos right height speaker it measured it at 3 ft from the microphone when it was more like 13 ft. The receiver doesn't have as many DSP settings as my old SR707. There is no THX decoding. You would have to go up to the TX-NR747 or higher. When playing blue-ray I let the receiver decode automatically. Dolby Atmos works great. I streamed Mad Max UHD from VUDU through Roku 4 and the receiver had not problem processing the 4K and Dolby Atmos signal. I recommend using the Onkyo app to monitor the incoming and outgoing signals. If you have apple devices, airplay works great. Still no DTS X yet unfortunately. Still waiting for a firmware update. If and when Onkyo releases the update I may give this a 5 star rating. Less than two months,and the receiver doesn't work
Less than two months,and the receiver doesn't work. I can't reset , the display reads ( NG: L R ) . I looked though the manual, it says nothing about this command. There is nothing I can do to make it work.

Great Reciever So Far
I purchased this receiver last month, but I only just got speakers to hook up to it yesterday. I decided to go with the Onkyo TX-NR646 due to the fact that it was one of the few newer receivers that is 4k HDCP 2.2 complaint on several HDMI ports, which I want for future-proofing. I do not currently own a 4k setup, so I cannot comment on how the picture quality passes through as of yet. I can say that setting up the unit was easy as long as you have no issue following the on screen prompts. The only issue that I ran across was attempting to set up the WiFi. The Onkyo would find my network fine, but repeatedly failed to connect. I am not sure if this was an issue on the part of the receiver or the router, but I rebooted both and then was able to connect without any further issue. The sound quality that the system provides is great; much better than the old sound bar that I used to have. I am excited about the fact that the 646 is Atmos compatable, but again, I do not currently have the height channels to test this fully. Overall it is a great receiver for the price, especially if you want to future proof yourself for 4k content.
