Polar Loop - feedback from a fitness professional

I am a 22 year experienced personal trainer and a technology fanatic. I've researched many other activity trackers but the only device that caught my attention was the Polar Loop. Today everybody wants to expend calories but it seems consumers are being misled by features lacking true merit. As a fitness expert, I see that caloric expenditure cannot be accurately measured by a motion sensor alone nor can it be determined by the type of exercises you perform. There are too many variables to consider such as resistance and speed of the movement thus the fitness level of the user. Although a few activity trackers utilize the measurement of skin temperature and skin moisture that may seem interesting,I still think it's still a matter of years before any company can develop a feasible working formula. But, I know there are at least three scientifically proven methods that will work. One method is done by measuring your oxygen uptake OR carbon dioxide out-take. The other is by measuring heart rate. Unfortunately today you can only find oxygen measuring masks at a specialized physician,a high profile athlete facility or cardiologist. But with the Polar Loop; it is currently the only activity tracker compatible with a chest heart rate monitor.
I've had my Loop for about a week and I'm testing the Loop through many variations of exercise routines and applications. Keep in mind that the Polar Loop will function and track without the optional chest heart rate strap, but it will function similar to many of the other activity trackers such as the Nike Fuel Band, Jawbone Up, Fitbit Force etc. If you pair it with the Polar H7 heart rate strap it improves calorie expenditure tracking significantly. I really mean SIGNIFICANTLY. I don't intend to wear both pieces all the time because that would be such an inconvenience but wearing the strap during workouts and recreation is ideal and clearly you can see a difference in your activity reports.
Attached is a screen shot of one of the graph reports that was mocked up. I added the workout information just to reflect how the heart rate monitor makes a difference from exercise to exercise. Remember if you purchase an activity tracker that detects motion alone, it will count activity based on repetitions. As you can see, I performed very minimal reps in this workout. So, using a motion sensor alone; If I wave at someone for 50 minutes in duration, it would probably show more calories expended than my intense heavy workout. right? Also, I've included a VIDEO TIP for swimmers that wish to use the loop in the water.

Great addition for wrist devices

I have had this for two days now and I think I really am going to like this. I workout 5-6 times a week and like to know my heart rate. It syncs with the software easily and downloads the activity right to the calendar. I didn't even realize that when I used my polar H7 heart monitor with my Iphone (left apple which became a problem because I had nothing that would read my Bluetooth heart monitor) that it was keeping track on a calendar. When it was synching my stuff I realized I could go all the way back to when I was doing my insanity workouts this summer.
Overall I think this has tons of upside with their software and allowed me to again use my heart monitor since my device was unable to support it. Polar made another great device.

A step up from the Fitbit Flex

I purchased this to replace a Fitbit Flex that has stopped on me 3 times. Things I like about this tracker: easy to read display, tracks your sleep without having to put into a "sleep"mode, sets goals based upon your activity level, will track your heart rate with a HRM, the band is so much better than the Fitbit Flex, and the charger is so much better than the Flex.

Pretty good but lacking a couple of features

This is my 5th fitness tracker now. The others I have used are the:
Withings 02 Pulse
Samsung Gear Fit
I think this is the one I will be sticking with. It does just about everything I want my fitness tracker to do but it lacks a couple of features I liked in others. Of all the ones I've tried so far I think the Garmin Vivosmart is the best. But I ended up returning that one because it would constantly lose sync with my phone and had to be manually re-paired. It would happen multiple times a day and I just got tired of having to go through the pairing process again every time. It was very frustrating.
The Polar Loop has quite a few things going for it:
* Looks good - I originally had the basic black model but exchanged it for the purple, (Black Currant).
* Comfortable to wear - I wear the band loose enough that it slides around a bit on my wrist so I barely know it's there.
* Connects easily to the HR6 or HR7 Polar heart rate strap. I wanted a tracker with heart rate function because I do more weight lifting than cardio so I wanted a device that would give me accurate calories burned while lifting.
* No problems pairing with my phone.
For the cons:
* Wrist band must be cut to size - I found this process to be very tedious. I'm not a watch maker. Using the tiny tool to remove and reinstall the retaining pins was very frustrating. I actually lost one of the pins because it immediately shot across the room when I took it out of the buckle. Luckily Polar provides you with a spare pin just for this issue.
* App is still in Beta and is pretty basic.
* Proprietary charging cable - I don't know why all of these tracker manufacturers can't just use a standard USB charging cable like on Android phones. I've had 3 or 4 different brands of phone in the last couple of years and every one of them had the same charging cable. The Polar one connects to the back of the device and it is a bit of a pain feeding it around the buckle to connect it.
Overall I like this tracker but if not for the pairing issue with the Garmin Vivosmart I would have stayed with that one.

Great Activity Monitor

I have in the past used the Fitbit and the Jawbone activity monitors. After a year the Fitbit would no longer charge. After a year the band on the Jawbone got so soft that when I plugged it into my phone to sync my activity the plug went inside the band and was difficult to connect. I went without an activity monitor for a couple of months. My husband suggested we go buy me another. This time I chose the Polar. I love the Bluetooth connectivity and it automatically syncs to my iPhone every couple of hours. I purchased the Polar H7 Heart Monitor to use in conjunction to track training levels and percent of Fit to Fat Burn. I like the sleep tracker as well. My only complaint is short battery life, but then again that is to be expected since it is constantly running, especially with the heart rate monitor. I am completely satisfied with this purchase. Best monitor I have used.

Odd to set up, but once that's done

I'd read great things about the Polar Loop, and decided to give it a try.
Upon purchasing and taking home, I was sure to read the instructions - several times - as one has to cut the band to make it fit. Polar does have a replacement policy, but who wants to use those? Needless to say, instructions and wrist measurement were simple.
The device is easy to use once fitted, and provides accurate detail. Especially with the heart monitor (I've a separate review for the H7), every detail is tracked. With the H7, battery life goes down to 2~3 days. Without the H7, the device lasts for 5.
I like how the band is waterproof, so I can wake up and shower and not be bothered.
Readouts on active and inactive times were pretty much on the mark, with occasional exceptions - which were few.
Oh, do not fit this band on your arm that you intend to use a computer mouse with. Or swap wrists and remember to update the program you're using it on the other wrist.
Yup, the application (Windows, Mac OS X for desktops, iOS and Android mobile devices) will ask which arm your band is on. Accuracy is a nice touch. The app shows how often you're lying down, sitting, standing, moving, rapidly moving. The results are definitely solid, though using a recumbent bike isn't going to get you anywhere - in terms of seeing activity, unless you are wearing a heart monitor.
There is no sensor for stair-climbing, but it's a minor nitpick.
Overall, I am impressed by the unit and its accuracy, especially with the heart monitor.

I have been in the market for an activity tracker for some time but nothing really got me excited until I discovered the Polar Loop. It has the look that I think is beautiful; the functionality that I am looking for with on-screen coach to let me know how far or close I am to reaching my daily goal; it tells time, number of steps, calories burned. And it is waterproof; I don't have to take it off to take a shower. It is one great product. The size is customized to
The app, Polar Flow, for the iPhone had some bugs in the beginning -- it wouldn't sync, and the day was one day ahead. I deleted the app after a day of using the Loop. But I re-installed, paired the Loop with the iPhone again, and problem solved! Everything works harmoniously.
Today is my third day using the Loop and I am happy with my purchase.

I chose the Polar Loop as I wanted an activity monitoring bracelet that had connectivity with a Heart Rate monitor. FitBits, Jawbones did not have that capability. Also, Polar is known for the quality of their HRMs. It's also stylish and comfortable. People always ask me what it is/what it does and comment how cool it looks. I've recommended this to my friends and they ended up buying it themselves and loving it too! Polar should pay me. LOL.

Great Tracker If You're A Runner

I have been researching wrist worn activity trackers for awhile now and I settled on the Polar Loop. I was attracted by the design, ability to be worn while swimming, and price. It is very comfortable to wear all day and I don't have a problem with having to size and cut it yourself, I prefer it to fit my wrist and not be a general size. The button is easy to use and the device is very easy to read. The clock on it comes in handy as well. It is registered to my left wrist but i wear it on my right sometimes and I have no problem with that.
I would say that I lead an active lifestyle and wanted to use this to help motivate me at the gym. Unfortunately, I have discovered that it does not accurately measure activity unless you are walking/running. Whenever I have used this at the gym I will lift weights and do an ab workout and my activity meter will barely go up. However, when I start doing my cardio (usually running) the activity meter really soars. Its a little disappointing that all my hard work elsewhere goes almost unnoticed. In order to meet my daily activity goal, more running, walking, and full body movement is needed rather than ones involve primarily upper body.
I have swam laps with my polar loop and I have mixed feelings. It does measure my activity properly but the pressure from the water turns the display button on every time my hand goes underwater. It even once put my Loop in airplane mode. So I was happy with the tracking while swimming but it was battery consuming because of the display being constantly turned on. Maybe that is just my device though. Also, Sleep tracking is not very deep in detail. It just tells you when you went to bed and when you woke up.
Overall, Polar Loop does do a good job of reminding you not to sit on your butt and get up and move. I just wish it would give more credit for workouts not involving running such as lifting weights, rowing, or abdominal workouts. For running enthusiasts I would highly recommend this, but if your exercise consist of options other than running you might want to research into it.
