Great price for a second dvd use
Posted by: CharlieB1 from: New Rochelle on
Great price , slim and compact for a second DVD but concern is the Audio fuction that went out after several use in 6 weeks. Could not bring it back within 30 day exchange policy but was lucky to get the 90 day Limited Service Warranty with Sony upon registering after purchasing of item. I recommend getting the extended warranty upon purchase because it was too soon for Audio to go out on a new product item. I was able to reconnect the the dvd to get the sound back but concern that it would go out again for good and took advanage of the 90 limited warranty.

Remembers several discs back
Posted by: ConEdisonEgg from: MN on
I bought this DVD Player because my 12 year old dual-disc player that I won from an coin-op arcade stopped working. I didn't want to spend alot and this was the right price for a name brand item. There was another player that cost about $5-$10 less, but the box of that one didn't tell me what type of connectors were available. I needed the 3-RCA plug-in type as I don't have an HDTV or HDMI availability and the box for this player had a picture of the available plugs. I was buying an HDTV at the same time, but that replaced my computer monitor; my TV is an old analog with over-the-air connections (I don't have cable/dish).
The set-up went very easy, but it took a bit to get used to the remote. It works fine but was a little different from what I was used to.
I discovered something excellent with this player: It not only remembers where you left off, but it remembers from disc to disc. I was watching a show (play all) season and switched out to another disc of a different TV show in the middle of an episode. When I put the first disc back in it said "resume from last [stop]." I thought there must be something wrong, but I tried it and sure enough it continued from where I had left off on that disc. I've done this several times now, switching between several discs; and it always remembers where I left off on each one! Magnificent!
I wasn't very impressed with the "progressive scan." It moves randomly along the disc as you search, but you can't watch the seconds in-between. I'm not saying this right, but I don't know the words. The progressive scan seems to skip through the disk faster than I want it to, and can't get it to only skip forward a few seconds - it has to skip/scan forward (or backward) a minute or more.

Good quality, until it stops working
Posted by: edlute from: Duluth. MN on
For the first time, I am VERY unhappy with a Sony product. I purchased it just 7 months ago, and did not buy the extended warranty from Best Buy, as I have never had to use one for a Sony product , and I trusted it would work as it should. Any blame should be mine for assuming it would last, because it is a Sony. Initially, it worked perfectly, but recently, it freezes up, and stops working altogether. Beware of Sony's 1 year warranty; I called them, and they told me it is covered for parts, and _not_ labor in fixing it. In effect, it would cost as much as I paid for it, Plus shipping, to get it to function again. My gripe is not with Best Buy, but with Sony.
For the price of around $40, one would expect a Sony DVD player to work, and not to become useless junk in 7 months. Buyer beware if you want this item to function for greater that 6 months.

Great basic no frills DVD player
Posted by: Oldmoviefan from: Downey,CA on
I was shopping on-line for a decent DVD player. Not a blue ray and didn't need all the fancy stuff. Came across this one and after reading the reviews decided to buy it. I was really happy with the whole buy on-line and then pick it up after work thing. I had never done this before.

A very simple unit-not too complicated

Other than having to run back out to Radio Shack (because they were closer) to get a longer cable-the DVD player works like a charm-would recommend this unit

All I wanted was a basic DVD player. This one fits the bill.

I'm not sure why this is so highly rated here. Bought mine at Best Buy because I'd read reviews on another site that complained of early failure.
I figured at least it would be easier to return locally. True to form at 2 months it would quit playing both DVD-RW and commercial DVDs. No message, the screen goes black. Since it was still under warranty I was able to sent it back to Sony at my expense. Plugged in the so called fixed one they sent back and 10 minutes into the commercial DVD it quit and of course wouldn't play my finalyzed dvd-rw. At $!10a pop to ship, it isn't worth it.

It's inexpensive, small, easy to use, and provides a great picture quality. I was really surprised at the picture quality because I connected it to an old 4X3 TV with composite cables. I thought the picture was going to be so so BUT the picture is amazingly sharp.

Hard to find a Basic unit without the new options, but that is what I wanted. I ordered this one and so far it's the best DVD player I have had. No skipping, sticking or jumping. I like it.
