A: Unless you and your son live on a mountain top, over open water, or in the desert with no obstructions between the two of you this radio will not provide you with the "up to 40 mile" advertising range. You might look at the MXT400 MicroMobile and install the MXTA26 antenna on the top of your homes to provide this type of range. Additionally, the use of a repeater would be recommended as well.
