Whether you are learning basic photography or honing more advanced skills, using a digital camera filter can dramatically improve your photos. When selecting your first lens filter or two, you might be overwhelmed by the numerous options. A good place to start could be the polarizing lens filter and the UV lens filter.

UV filters, which cut down ultraviolet rays, can reduce the appearance of haze created by pollution or moisture in the air. These kinds of filters range in strength based on the thickness of the UV coating. Thicker ones may need exposure compensation to avoid adding an amber effect to the picture. Polarizing filters can act in a similar way, depending on the model you choose. To get the longest use out of your filter, choose one made with quality glass. High-end glass filters will be more expensive, but they are built to last a long time and bring top-notch quality to your work. While most photographers use conventional glass screw-on filters, some also use square or rectangular options made of other materials with unique qualities. For the conventional screw-on filters, you will need to choose a model that is compatible with your lens brand and size.

Other camera accessories that will improve your photography include camera flashes and light reflectors and modifiers, both of which give you more control over your lighting. If you work indoors, you may also need to invest in a studio backdrop.
