A tripod functions as a mobile and collapsible camera stand. It can help you keep your camcorder, DSLR or mirrorless camera steady when you are taking longer exposure photos or when you shoot video. A camera tripod is especially useful when you are using a long camera lens, such as a telephoto lens, which makes your camera heavier and harder to handle.
Using a tripod also allows you to shoot self-tapes and timed photos more easily because no one needs to be holding the camera. When you use a camera or cellphone tripod, you can take the family photo with everyone in it. It’s the older version of the selfie stick!
So, whether you’re a professional using a camcorder or DSLR camera or simply an amateur taking quality photos with the camera on your smartphone, you can make great us of a tripod.
To help you decide what to look for in a tripod for photography, ask yourself some questions. First, how tall does your tripod need to be? If you want your tripod to reach five or six feet in height when the legs are fully extended, expect that it will be a little heavier and bulkier than shorter options.
The style of tripod legs also varies. Most tripods have adjustable legs so that they can offer a range of heights, but some tripods, especially action camera mounts and smartphone tripods, have flexible legs that can grip onto objects.
Next, consider what tripod weight you can handle. If you’re using a tripod only at home or in a studio, weight may not matter, but many people want to take their tripod on the go. So, make sure you have the ability to carry your tripod, either on its own or in your camera bag.
