Hi Sam,
 I'm not sure if Office is sold as a one-time purchase anymore since they like to push the Office 365 Subscription.
However, you can use Office in a web browser. Just log into the mobile versions of Word/Excel/PowerPoint. If you have a hard time finding them, I know you can access them through the OneDrive website.

Another solution would be to install OpenOffice (free open source office suite) onto the device.

Any MS compatible program can be installed as it sees itself as a windows OS I installed an old Office 2003 on it. Be aware of the RAM and space limitations when doing so.
