“Okay, so my question is, is there a way to set up this system to connect to my tv for surround sound so I don't always have to be using the Samsung streaming to hear the surround. so like if I have an Apple TV hooked up to it can I still hear surround?”

Yes, run the audio from Cable Box or Satellite receiver to a input marked TV Audio Input.

You have to connect your HDMI cable from the Samsung surround sound to the HDMI input on your tv labels HDMI ARC which stands for audio return Chanel. That way what ever you hook to your tv such as a Apple TV or game system etc will come through your surround sound when you switch to that input on your tv. .
