“When i set my program to record at a later time it will record for 1 second and shut off I'd this something I am doing wrong or a bad unit.”

I don't know exactly what the problem could be. I would suggest you try with several stations one at a time. I have recorded a whole program for almost an hour using a USB drive which I later used on another player and it did well.
