I believe you do. This is what is stated in the instruction booklet.

If you are asking if you can play something recorded on other media like another flash drive or portable hard drive, then yes, it will play most other recordings. You cannot record without a flash drive or portable hard drive, however.

There is no hard drive with this unit so you must record to either a flash drive or external hard drive through the usb port.
