Yes, this unit will work. You connect an INDOOR antenna to the Aluratek RF-in. Then connect the Aluratek to your TV via HDMI or Red, White, and Yellow audio/video RCA cable. You may also be able to use the coax out to the input on the TV if it does not have RCA red, white and yellow connectors.

I don't want to record I just want to receive programming via the converter box with an antenna on an old tv. That is my actual question and I a not clear on that I guess.

Yes it will, it will record only local channels, you’ll need some kind of antenna hooked to you tv, then you can set to record local tv programs
