“Only once did the microphone pick up sound; the video always works. I've set and tested the sound with the camera mic in zoom and google hangout with no luck. I've had to disconnect my laptop from my display to its camera and mic for video calls.”

I am on a Mac and simply opening PhotoBooth solves zero mic problems. The mic is not working.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.If you're on a Windows PC, go into settings > system > sound and check to make sure the audio driver is showing under the INPUT menu. You can set volume here. If your computer is older you may need to update your audio drivers. To be sure the Windows audio drivers are working test the webcam using the Windows CAMERA app. On a Mac use the Photo Booth app. Both apps have the ability to record video in addition to taking snap shots.
