You will need to link the tablet to an Amazon account, but you do not have to purchase anything from Amazon if you intend to run only free apps (like Pluto or Zoom), or apps with a subscription that can be purchased externally (like Netflix or Spotify). You do not have to pay to use the included Silk browser to navigate the Internet, as long as you have wifi available. The tablet as a built-in email app, but you do not have to set up an email account with it. It does not have cellular capabilities, so no need to link with a phone account. Hope this helps!
