You get just one or the other. They both function independently. The only difference is the sound quality and size.

Unless u getting it on deal for as low as it's now for 25$ you really don't need it to pair.
It just gives u option to use it in multiple rooms or keep dot to do things in same way except music experience won't be that great
I would not buy it as mandate 
If I get good deal then u shall go for it

If he's into vinyl and has audiophile speakers definitely get the Echo. The Dot is basically for speech that will play music but not well.

One will be sufficient. I bought the Echo for my teenager to stream music. The sound is pretty good for it's size, but if you're looking for some punch look at getting sonos one speaker(s) with alexa built in.

The main difference between the Echo and the Dot is the Echo has a larger speaker for those deep bass tones.
