Either 'unit' (Dot, Echo, etc) works, the bigger the unit the better the audio (larger speakers). FYI these are all tied to your Amazon account so if the acct is in your 'soon to be ex hubby' name and you want total control, you may want to get your own Amazon account.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I have an Alexa and the Echo dot. I use Alexa in one city home and the Echo Dot in my condo 150 miles away. I got my son who lives 509 miles away the Echo Dot and it works fine without Alexa. You do not need to have Alexa to use the Echo Dot. The Echo works on its own.
