Do I need to have internet for this to operate? null

Almost all functionality of the Echo dot is an assistant with access to the Web for the services you are looking for. So this piece of equipment is useless with out the internet. In theory, some of the functionality like the wake word might work with out access to internet but its useless with out the internet access. What would you do by simple invoking Alexa and not be able to do anything after that.

Yes you will. A WiFi connection to be exact.
