We want to install Echo Dot for elderly mom who can't use a smart phone so she can call us with using Alexa. We can install the app on one of our smart phones. But that phone would then not be in the apt. Can Echo Dot-Alexa accept commands this way? null

My boyfriend calls me from his echo dot. but his phone he calls from is in the room. You would probably need a basic phone with all the phone numbers on it in her home.

As far as I know this should work fine wherever you are. The device and app are communicating through Amazon and you create the relationship between the Echo device and the device running the Alexa app. I can even see what songs my E-Dot is playing while away from home. I can also remotely turn devices on/off that Alexa/Echo know about through Alexa on my phone.
