My question is if I buy the Echo Dot for my mom and I already have an echo the first Alexa at home can I set heart is up even know she doesn’t have a smart phone can she still use it after I set it up without her having to use a smart phone null

I think so. The phine is really just for set up and settings. It doesn't need to be on or nearby for the dot to work once it's set up.

You need a smart phone to initially set it up and WiFi to run it but otherwise yes after the initial set up she does not need a smart phone to use it.

The Echo Dot for the most part is self contained and should be able to do 90% of what's asked of it within its limits. The app is for setting up many other products and to check messages and notifications that's at least 24 hrs old. Everything else is done from speakers
