It depends what you're using it for. One works by itself, and they come with power cords.

It would really depend on what devices you prefer. The Echo Dot is a great device for a smaller room, the Echo has two speakers built in and will give you a great quality sound (if you want to use it for music). The Smart Plug is a great add on for devices that you would like to have the ability to turn on and off with your voice such as a lamp. You can use the Echo devices simultaneously to listen to multi room music, or make phone calls on. The possibilities are endless! Have a great day!
