No you don't need to purchase control set up. I think thats to have Best Buy set up the device for you. You can do it yourself pretty easy. Then you voice control it to operate Alexa enabled devices, ask questions, check your schedule, create shopping list etc.

Unless buying the newest version which could be different, the echo dot 3 just simply plugs in the wall, you connect it to wifi via the Alexa app, and go from there. No need to purchase extra. I have full function without adding anything. I can do anything from tell it to play music, to ask the weather, and to turn off the lights. Also use it with my fire stick tv and it will switch from cable to Netflix, play and pause, etc!
