This is exactly what I did with the one I bought. As long as you don’t mind them using yours amazon music account. Every once in a while they’ll also get notifications about your amazon orders.

My daughter bought the echo dot for me and she set it up with her smartphone as I don't have one.

You will need a constant internet network for it to work.
