yes, it just plugs into the wall, standard socket. It will need internet. For a child's room I would buy one withOUT a camera.

You will need a device with the Alexa app to set up the echo dot, and it does have some features that are much easier to use with the app. However, you can put the app on a smartphone or something such as a tablet. This is just for initial set up! And "If you're setting up from a computer, go to https://alexa.amazon.com/, select Settings > Set up a new device and follow the instructions." In all the mobile device such as a cellphone or tablet or even a computer is only needed for initial set up of device! Hope this helps!
