I bought this for a five year old so I can't testify to word or excel but a quick download gave us everything else.

Can use right off shelf. Easier to access certain features if you log into ur amazon account though

Hello, CLR! With the Fire HD 8 Plus you are not required to have Word, Excel etc. After initial set up of the device out of the box it is ready to be used and not limited. I hope this helps, have a great day!
