Amazon has their own app store. You can download certain apps from the store but there isnt nearly as many as google. The kids will be able to play games on it but i guess it depends on if you have service to it or the games are offline.

It comes with Amazon's own app store, which is similar to Google Play and just like Google Play it does have plenty of apps and games to choose from. You can put Google Play on this tablet, but it is a hassle from what I was told. To answer your other question yes, it does work well in a car while traveling. Battery life is excellent and it does charge fairly quickly simply by plugging in a USB charging cable into a vehicle's charging port while traveling.
