• No, it is not necessary to have amazon prime to use this tablet. The only real difference between this tablet and say a samsung tablet is that it uses an operating system completely designed just for the amazon devices. I have not found this to be an issue and would highly recommend this tablet to anyone looking for a great device for under 100.00

• No, you do not need to have Amazon Prime though you get a lot of content for free with a Prime membership.
