Hi Lyn! There are a lot of ways to make calls using the Fire HD 8 Kids Pro, from Alexa calling to using specific apps such as Messenger, however there is no built in phone or SMS functionality. You can also use the Amazon Parent Dashboard to restrict access to specific apps or contacts when it comes to making calls for some additional piece of mind.
