It has both surge only protection as well as battery back up. For sensitive equipment I would recommend using the back up portion. Hope this helps. I have been using these for many years and never had my equipment fail or damaged during outages.

If the power is out for too long the UPS will go to battery to provide power until the battery runs out. You would just want to make sure the equipment connected to the UPS is under 900 watts.
