It works just like a surge protector, so no software needed. The feature you likely won't get without software is the auto shutdown that would do an automatic r shutdown of your PC if you lost power. It's a feature that I've probably used once in a decade of owning this and similar products.

I use 2 units, one of them is powering the phone system - with no PC to install software on or communicate with. The unit works just fine.

I do not have to monitor the devices. I am able to use this unit without installing any software.

Thank you for your interest in our products. Yes you can use the BackUPS without the software. If you want a graceful shutdown you would need to connect the USB cable to the unit and use the software integrated into the operating system. Windows and Mac OS would have the options available.
