Thank you for the interest in our products. If the surge were to take a large enough surge that it can't shunt it ground the unit will sacrifice itself to prevent damage to the connected equipment. The protection working LED will turn off on the unit as well if the unit is no longer able to take a surge.

Lightning does what lightning wants to do. Your house or office is grounded to encourage it to go elsewhere, but if you get a direct strike, nothing can handle that. I would say that minor surges and fluctuations in power will be handled fine, perhaps even moderate surges. Big surges; well it depends on circumstances. There is a USB cable from the unit to your computer that allows you to monitor status and for the unit to shut down your computer when the battery get's low. If you take a strike though, that may not work.
