• This is the third generation in the Air series. The original iPad Air was followed by the iPad Air 2, which is now followed by the iPad Air. Since Apple chose not to name this model the iPad Air 3, I can understand your uncertainty, but it is the iPad Air 3rd generation.

• I believe it is a 3 rd generation, because when the Geek Squad set it up for my, email said welcome to the 3 rd. generation. Other than that I am learning something all the time.
