An Apple "pencil" is definitely not mandatory IMHO. When I purchased my 11" iPad Pro, I assumed I would eventually purchase the pencil, even bought an iPad case with built in storage for the pencil. However, until I read this question I had forgotten the pencil even existed! I use my iPad Pro for nearly everything I do and I can't think of a single instance where I was prevented from doing a task because I lacked the pencil. It might be a requirement in some applications but not in my instance.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. The Apple Pencil is mandatory if you want pen pressure and app integration. Basic styluses will work but only functionally equivalent to using a finger.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I use my iPad to write on, just as I would paper. There are some really good apps for that. Other stylus’ will work, just check that they work with not only the iPad, but the app you’re are going to use it with. The nice thing about the Apple Pencil is you rest your hand anywhere on the screen with no worries of making unwanted marks. With the iPad Pro 2018, use must buy the second generation pencil, and it is $25 more than the first generation device. But well worth it.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. You don’t need the pencil. Although it writes very smoothly.
