The Ipad has a good long life. I bought a 1st gen iPad right before the 2nd gen came out and had it until about 4 years ago when they stopped supporting it which is when I went with an iPad Air. My dad has a 2nd gen and his is still being updated. I couldn’t tell you specifically how many updates there was.

I don't know, but I have an iPad version 1 or 2 from at least 5 years ago, and it is fine, on software 9.3.5 right now and working great! I am only thinking of going to an iPad Pro now for more storage and not sure what other features there, but to make sure it's compatible with latest Apple TV... Mine right now works w our original Apple TV.
