I had them in my ears in transparency mode when the leader started prayers.before Mass.. I could only hear the leader when I used the AirPods. I have moderate hearing loss in the right ear. The praying of the rosary before Mass is kept quite soft so as not to disturb others in Church. At a service I do not have problems because of excellent sound system.
