Well put both airpods in your ears it plays through both. Take one out music pauses. Keep 1 inside charger, it plays through the one in your ears. As soon as you take out of ears, music pauses. You can have 2 people listen through one piece each as well. But if one person takes it out of his/her/their ear, music pauses.

AirPods will automatically play sound through both earpieces. For iPhones, simply flick open the case near your phone with bluetooth on, and for android, pair with the button on the case. Both methods will pair both airpods and act like a regular headphone.
