The iPad 9.7 just released in March, 2018 is what would be considered a "6th generation". The "5th generation" model is from 2017. It is sometimes confusing because many features are the same as well as the price. The March, 2018 model supports the Apple Pencil whereas the 5th generation model does not. There are also other modifications on the new iPad, but I do not know them yet except for a faster processor and possible 4 speakers instead of 2.
