Hello Sharptech, This version of the iPad (5th generation wi-di) will not work with the Apple pencil. Only the iPad Pro models work with the Apple Pencil. Apple just released an updated model this year (2018) of this iPad which does work with the pencil. So if you really must have the Apple Pencil, then you should move up to this latest (2018) model or even grab any version of the iPad Pro because those models (regardless of year) have support for the Apple Pencil Good luck!
