I replaced an older version iPad with the new one. The viewing areas of old and new iPads are very similar if not the same. The difference is that the newer iPad is about half an inch narrower. The height of both is almost the same. Apple no longer supports the older iPad you have and you are not getting any operating system updates. In addition the display is better on the newer version as well as the speed.

As you correctly stated, that is the viewing area. The only changes are the actual physical size of the chassis which is why older cases do not fit these latest models. The reason the models may appear slightly different when looking at them is the bezels (the black or white borders around the screen) are also different sizes. You'll see the newer models haee much thinner bezels than the older iPads. My in-laws still use the original iPad for their games and stuff as it was introduced on stage by the late Steve Jobs. Good luck!
