No they didn't copy from the old one and they didn't advice to destroy the old iPad.

The sales clerk didn’t ask me any of those questions about recycling or return for money or credit. You could ask them before purchase. That is something I wish he would have asked me because I brought the old iPad with me
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I recently upgraded my iPad. I made sure there was a recent backup in my cloud account. Then it was simple to just set up the new iPad using my Apple ID and the backup. You will still have to set up some features such as email. I was also able to trade in my iPad for a gift card and apply it to the new sale. You can clear the iPad before trading it in.
