You do not need a cellular plan for the GPS chip to work in an iPad. However, all GPS chip equipped iPads require an initial 2 year cellular plan. After that you do not need to renew the plan. Most pilots to my knowledge only have the Wi-Fi version. I recommend that you go to the Foreflight web site and view their videos. Their software is geared for Apple only and they are very knowledgeable about iPads. Hope this helps out.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. If your iPad doesn't have cellular capabilities then you will have to get an external GPS receiver. Bluetooth or some other connection.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. It is not mandate to have the cell capabilities to have the GPS enabled. If you have a WiFi connection, it is enough to enable the GPS. GPS is inbuilt in most of the handheld devices nowadays.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. No, but if you aren’t connected to wi-fi the GPS doesn’t work. I have wi-fi only (why pay the monthly cell fee) and I hotspot it to my phone.
