An unlocked phone allows you to go from carrier to carrier by just changing the sim card. If the phone is locked, the carrier has to unlock it before you can change carriers and this can take days. Locked phones have always been a deterrent from changing your carrier. If you purchase/upgrade your phone through your carrier you cannot get an unlocked phone. These are sold through stores like Best Buy.
