I have Sprint too and just upgraded. I don't think you would be able to do that, not being the original account holder.... Are you on another line on the account? Maybe you can pull a ruse: Talk him into going to a Sprint store and then surprising him there with purchasing the upgrade? Outside of buying outright an unlocked X, you may want to just call Sprint to see what options they suggest.
