The touchid is a new thing with Macs that allows you to bypass the login with just your fingerprint, much like some phones do. It is very nice if you are multi-tasking and your computer goes to sleep often. Note that if you turn the computer off and on, or when booting back up after it has been off, you will still need to use the password then. But Macs do not need to be turned off very often at all, so I rarely have to use my password, only for booting up and for downloading anything, for security reasons.
