• No. You have to put the pencil on top of your iPad Pro for it to charge. There is a small magnetic strip under or beside, depending how you are looking at the device, the volume buttons that will attach to the pen. The pen will show at the top or side, after doing some configurations and test when you secure it on top, it will show the battery percentage and that it has connected successfully by saying “Apple Pencil”. There is a different port than the previous iPad Pros, sort of mirrors the Samsung phones charging port, so it may not work on the old pencils. I hope this helps answer your question.
