How could it? It does not even have a USB Port on either side of the adapter. This is Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 1 and 2 which uses a USB-C TB3 on the side that connects to the computer and Thunderbolt 1/2 which uses a Mini Displayport connector on the end that connects to the device. It will not even operate on the regular Macbook since it does not have Thunderbolt at all, only USB-C. Same port different technology. It is ONLY for adapting the new version of Thunderbolt to the older versions of Thunderbolt. I bought the Apple Superdrive back in 2008 when the first Macbook Air came out and I found that it would ONLY connect directly to a Type-A port on a Mac that did not ship with an internal Superdrive. It was not even a power issue. It is all software limited. I tried combining 3 USB ports together (2 for power one for data) and it still would not work. I am afraid you either need to give up your ancient technology or buy a third party DVD Burner as Apple left optical drives in the dust long ago. Remember Apple is a forward thinking company so if you want to use old technology with the latest and greatest Apple's you need to be forward thinking as well.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. No, this goes from USB-C to ThunderBolt. Apple makes a USB-C to USB adapter and it will connect your external disk drive to a newer Apple laptop.
