I'm using it to import video from a 16 year old Canon Digital (digital tape) camera. The camera was firewire, but the adapter works fine, and iMovie recognizes the camera and even controls the rewind, fast forward and playback speeds. I'm also using the camera as a "pass-through" to import VHS data to my iMac. But I'm not sure about the throughput. I would contact Apple for the exact specs for your question.
