• You shouldn't have to worry about system settings, from the perspective of macOS that adapter might as well just be a normal audio jack and should work just like a built in audio jack. In my experience sometimes it isn't detected by my device, but unplugging and plugging it back in fixes any detection issues.

• Usually macOS figures it out automatically but if it doesn't you would need to go into System Preferences - Sound - Output and select the adapter.
