When your iPhone is off or out of range, your Apple Watch can use a Wi-Fi network to send and receive data. Your watch can also connect to a cellular network if you choose a GPS+ Cellular model and have an active cellular plan.

The gps and cellular are added. plus there is a cost from your carrier which is around $15 a month to have the gps and cellular features. I like it because I don't need to carry my phone on a run or hiking trip like I did with previous models. that's the only difference. to have those features you need to take your phone with you In the $289 version.. it still records where you have been, but not where you are at the time you check your watch. hope that helps. I can now go on a run or hike and leave my phone at home or in my car and still track my trips and receive calls without getting to the high peaks and pull out my phone. I am a forest ranger and this feature is why I got this watch. has worked well so far. works best when I have my headphones in. seems to get a better quality on the reception when I am in the wilderness. of course I can't use the apple headphones because they cancel the sound I need to hear to stay alive out there. Bose works best for that because I can hear the music and the threats that may come up.
