It doesn’t need to be but if you want to basically have a cellphone on your wrist for whatever reason and it’s $120 a yr added to your plan ($10/month) per watch

I get all my texts, phone calls, email notifications, and most app notifications on the watch. You can also accept calls and talk through the speaker.
