I'm assuming since the space gray case is aluminum that it can be scratched. I don't want silver colored scratches showing through. Is the color "painted" or does it go all the way through? null

On My S4 I had scratches on the part that touched your wrist but I had that for 4 years. My s4 which I’ve had for a month now doesn’t. With the ceramic back it’s unlikely to scratch the back and as for the sides. It won’t scratch unless it takes serious damage.

I believe it goes all the way through and is supposed to be less scratch resistant than the stainless steel.

It really hard to schatched, but even if you scratched you don't going to se that silver color, it seem like it is not painted!
