No, but if you want to make phone calls via your watch you do. You could exercise with the watch, listen to music, use the apps on the watch, etc., all without being near the phone. But if you want notifications of phone calls, texts, emails, then you need to be within 33 ft. Of the iPhone. If you buy the LTE version (with built in cellular capability), then you do NOT need to have the phone with you, completely independent.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Depends. If you have the cellular version that's connected to your cellular plan then no, you do not need to carry your iPhone with It. If you have the GPS model then you would need to carry your iPhone to receive notifications.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Depends on what you are trying to do. The GPS only can pair with Bluetooth and play music, track location and monitor exercise. GPS/Cell can take calls as well without the phone.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. If you only want it as a watch, you can use the Iwatch to tell time when it's away from your phone. All other apps will not be accessible. You need to be in range of your IPhone in order to use all the features.
